Turn Toward The One

O my mind, meditate on the Lord of the Universe.

I have seen all other sorts of efforts; whatever you can think of, will only bring failure. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O my mind, remember Govind, the Lord of the World.

I have seen every other kind of effort. Whatever other plan you think up only goes wrong.

Speak gently to your own mind, and point it toward the One.
The deeper layer

Turn your mind toward the Lord of the World; every other plan falls apart.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the centre of the shabad. Ray man mayray too govid bhaaj means: O my mind, remember the One who cares for the world.

Notice who he is talking to. He does not point at other people. He talks to his own mind, the way a coach talks to a player at halftime. Then he says what he has seen. Every plan that leaves the One out will bigras, fall apart. It is like a sandcastle built below the tide line. You can see what will happen, so you build higher up.

A Question to Sit With

How do you talk to yourself when you need to refocus?
