Wisdom From a True Guide

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਦੀਖਿਆ ਕੈਸੇ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥
bin gur deekhi-aa kaisay gi-aan.
Without the Guru's Teachings, how can anyone obtain spiritual wisdom?
ਬਿਨੁ ਪੇਖੇ ਕਹੁ ਕੈਸੋ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥
bin paykhay kaho kaiso Dhi-aan.
Without seeing - tell me: how can anyone visualize in meditation?
ਬਿਨੁ ਭੈ ਕਥਨੀ ਸਰਬ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥
bin bhai kathnee sarab bikaar.
Without the Fear of God, all speech in useless.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰ ਕਾ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥੫॥੬॥੧੯॥
kaho naanak dar kaa beechaar. ||5||6||19||
Says Nanak, this is the wisdom of the Lord's Court. ||5||6||19||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Without the Guru's teaching, how can anyone find wisdom?

Without seeing, tell me, how can anyone hold the One in meditation?

Without a holy fear of the One, a deep awe, all talk is wasted.

Nanak says: this is the wisdom of the One's Court.

Wisdom begins with awe, more than with clever words.
The deeper layer

Wisdom comes through the Guru, and it begins in awe.

Bin gur deekhi-aa kaisay gi-aan: without the Guru's teaching, how can there be wisdom? Bin bhai kathnee sarab bikaar: without bhai, all talk is useless. Bhai is often translated "fear of God"; here it is the hush of awe that comes over you before something vast. Kaho naanak dar kaa beechaar: this is the wisdom of the Court, and it begins in wonder.

A Question to Sit With

What fills you with awe — the good kind that makes you go quiet?
