In plain words

People are sick with the sickness of ego, haumai — the feeling of being a separate self.

The elephant is overpowered by the sickness of wild desire.

Through the sickness of the eyes, the moth flies into the flame and dies.

Through the sickness of the ears, the deer follows the sound of the bell and loses its life.

The feeling of being all alone is a sickness — and it can be healed.
The deeper layer

Ego and runaway wanting are a sickness, and a sickness can be healed.

Ha-umai rog maanukh ka-o deenaa: people are given the sickness of ego. Then come old pictures of creatures ruled by a single sense. Kaam rog maigal: the elephant, trapped through its desire. Darisat rog pach mu-ay patangaa: the moth, drawn by the light, burns in the flame. Naad rog khap ga-ay kurangaa: the deer, drawn by the hunter's bell, is caught and dies. One pull runs each life to its end, and people can be pulled off course the same way.

A Question to Sit With

When has wanting something very badly pulled you somewhere you did not want to go?
