When the Veil Lifts

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਆਦੇਸੁ ॥
paarbarahm satgur aadays.
I humbly bow to the Supreme Lord God, the True Guru.
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਦੇਸੁ ॥
man tan tayraa sabh tayraa days.
My mind and body are Yours; all the world is Yours.
ਚੂਕਾ ਪੜਦਾ ਤਾਂ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਇਆ ॥
chookaa parh-daa taaN nadree aa-i-aa.
When the veil of illusion is removed, then I come to see You.
ਖਸਮੁ ਤੂਹੈ ਸਭਨਾ ਕੇ ਰਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
khasam toohai sabhnaa kay raa-i-aa. ||2||
You are my Lord and Master; You are the King of all. ||2||

In plain words

I bow humbly to the Supreme One, the True Guru. My mind and body are Yours; the whole world is Yours.

When the curtain that hid You fell away, I came to see You. You are my Master; You are the King of all.

Sometimes what you are seeking was only ever behind a thin curtain.
The deeper layer

When a curtain lifts, you see the One who was there all along.

It opens with a bow. Aadays means a humble greeting to the Supreme One, the True Guru. Then comes the reason. Man tan tayraa sabh tayraa days — my mind and body are Yours, and the whole world is Yours.

Chookaa parhdaa — the curtain is gone. Parhdaa means a curtain or veil. Imagine a stage before a school play. The curtain hides everything. When it opens, the whole scene is there, lit up. It had been there the whole time.

And what does Guru Arjan see? Khasam toohai sabhnaa kay raa-i-aa — You are my Master and the King of all. The bow is what you naturally do when you see that you belong to what you were looking for.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you could not see for a while, and then suddenly could?
