In plain words

I had nothing good to offer and forgot to be thankful, and still the One was kind to me.

My mind and body are cooled and soothed; the sweet nectar rains down in my mind.

The Supreme One, the Guru, has become kind to me. Nanak says: I, Your servant, look upon the One and am filled with joy.

Kindness reaches you even on the days you feel you least deserve it.
The deeper layer

Grace comes even when you feel you don't deserve it, and it cools you like rain.

Guru Arjan speaks very humbly. Haraamkhor nirgun ka-o toothaa — the One was kind to me, though I had nothing to offer and forgot to be thankful. Nirgun means without good qualities. We come with empty hands, and kindness reaches us anyway.

Man tan seetal — my mind and body grew cool. Amrit voothaa — nectar rained down in my mind. Amrit is a sweet drink of life. Think of a hot summer day at the park, and then a cool rain begins. Everyone sighs with relief.

The Supreme One and the Guru became kind. And Guru Arjan, who calls himself a humble servant, looks on in delight. Nihaal means full of joy.

A Question to Sit With

When did someone show you kindness on a day you felt low?
