Back in the Water

jis kay raakhay ho-ay har aap.
One who has the Lord Himself as his Protector,
har har naam sadaa jap jaap.
chants and meditates forever on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.
saaDhsang har kay gun gaa-i-aa.
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, he chants the Glorious Praises of the Lord.
naanak satgur pooraa paa-i-aa. ||4||15||28||
O Nanak, he has found the Perfect True Guru. ||4||15||28||

In plain words

The one whom the One protects chants the Naam of the One, Har, Har, forever.

In the Sangat, they sing the praises of the One. Nanak says: they have found the Perfect True Guru.

The Sangat is one of the surest ways back home to yourself.
The deeper layer

The way back to the water is the Naam and the Sangat.

When the One is your protector, raakhay har aap, you are safe. That safety makes the way back possible. Two things carry you home. One is steady remembering of the Naam. The other is saaDhsang, the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One — singing together.

Think of a tired swimmer far from shore, and friends reaching out a hand. In that company, Nanak says, you find the Perfect True Guru.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the people you feel most yourself around?
