Kept Where the Heart Can Reach

ਭੈਰਉ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
bhairo mehlaa 5.
Bhairao, Fifth Mehl:
ਅਪਣੀ ਦਇਆ ਕਰੇ ਸੋ ਪਾਏ ॥
apnee da-i-aa karay so paa-ay.
He alone obtains it, unto whom the Lord shows Mercy.
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
har kaa naam man vasaa-ay.
He enshrines the Name of the Lord in his mind.
ਸਾਚ ਸਬਦੁ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
saach sabad hirday man maahi.
With the True Word of the Shabad in his heart and mind,
ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੧॥
janam janam kay kilvikh jaahi. ||1||
the sins of countless incarnations vanish. ||1||

In plain words

Only the one the One is kind to receives it. That person keeps the Naam of the One in their mind.

With the true Word in their heart and mind, the wrongs of countless lifetimes go away.

The weight of old mistakes can fall away once you let kindness in.
The deeper layer

The Naam is a gift, and the Giver's kindness is what brings it to you.

Apnee da-i-aa karay so paa-ay — the one the Giver is kind to receives it. We don't earn this gift. It is grace, and it is always on offer, like a door that is never locked. We only have to walk through.

Then the Naam settles into the mind. Saach sabad hirday man maahi — the true Word lives in the heart and the mind.

And something heavy lifts. Janam janam kay kilvikh jaahi — the wrongs of many lifetimes go away. Kilvikh means wrongs or mistakes. Think of a backpack stuffed with old worries you have carried for years. When the Word moves in, you can finally set it down. What is left is the hope of feeling light again.

A Question to Sit With

What old mistake would you like to finally set down?
