More Than Can Be Told

ਜਾ ਕੇ ਕਰਤਬ ਲਖੇ ਨ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
jaa kay kartab lakhay na jaahi.
His wondrous actions cannot even be described.
ਜਾ ਕਾ ਭਰਵਾਸਾ ਸਭ ਘਟ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
jaa kaa bharvaasaa sabh ghat maahi.
All hearts rest their faith and hope in Him.
ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਭਇਆ ਸਾਧੂ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ॥
pargat bha-i-aa saaDhoo kai sang.
He is manifest in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
ਭਗਤ ਅਰਾਧਹਿ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਰੰਗਿ ॥੨॥
bhagat araaDheh an-din rang. ||2||
The devotees lovingly worship and adore Him night and day. ||2||

In plain words

The wonders the One does are too many to describe.

Every heart rests its hope on the One.

In the Sangat, with holy people, the One shines out clearly.

The devotees worship the One with love, day and night.

The best things are often too big to explain but easy to feel.
The deeper layer

The One's wonders are beyond telling, and among holy people the One shines out clearly.

Kartab lakhay na jaahi: the One's deeds can't be written down. Try to list every wonder and the words run out. Every heart, sabh ghat, rests its hope on the One.

Where does the One become easy to see? Saadhoo kai sang: in the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One. This idea comes back again and again in Guru Arjan's Bhairao shabads. Think of a song you only half remember. Alone, you can't get the tune. But when a whole room starts singing it, suddenly you know every word. In the Sangat the One feels close, and loving hearts sing day and night.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you love that you find hard to put into words?
