No Peace In Picking Fights

ਸੰਤਸੰਗਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਜੋ ਬਾਦੁ ॥
satsang karahi jo baad.
Those who argue and fight with the Saints
ਤਿਨ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਛੁ ਸਾਦੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tin nindak naahee kichh saad. ||1|| rahaa-o.
- those slanderers find no happiness at all. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Those who argue and fight with the Sangat, the gathering of holy people,

those who tear others down find no joy at all.

A heart set on quarreling cannot hold happiness.
The deeper layer

Picking fights with good people brings no joy at all.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line. It is the center of the whole shabad. "satsang karahi jo baad" — those who quarrel with the good. Satsang is the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One — and baad means a quarrel. "tin nindak naahee kichh saad" — such people find no joy at all.

The fight itself blocks the calm they are looking for. It is like trying to fall asleep while you keep arguing in your head. The other side of this teaching is hopeful. Make peace, and the door to calm opens.

A Question to Sit With

When you let go of a fight, how does your mood change?
