Sikhism·Raag Bhairao·Shabad 70
Verse 3 of 5

What Contempt Costs

ਭਗਤ ਕੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕੰਧੁ ਛੇਦਾਵੈ ॥
bhagat kee nindaa kanDh chhaydaavai.
Slandering the devotees, the wall of the mortal's body is shattered.
ਭਗਤ ਕੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਨਰਕੁ ਭੁੰਚਾਵੈ ॥
bhagat kee nindaa narak bhunchaavai.
Slandering the devotees, he suffers in hell.
ਭਗਤ ਕੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਗਰਭ ਮਹਿ ਗਲੈ ॥
bhagat kee nindaa garabh meh galai.
Slandering the devotees, he rots in the womb.
ਭਗਤ ਕੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਰਾਜ ਤੇ ਟਲੈ ॥੨॥
bhagat kee nindaa raaj tay talai. ||2||
Slandering the devotees, he loses his realm and power. ||2||

In plain words

Speaking badly of the devotees breaks down the wall of the body.

Speaking badly of the devotees brings suffering, like a hell.

Speaking badly of the devotees leaves you withering in the darkness of the womb.

Speaking badly of the devotees costs you your power and your place.

A grudge quietly takes more from you than it ever gives.
The deeper layer

Contempt takes much more than it ever gives.

The verse repeats "bhagat kee nindaa" — slandering the devotees, the people who love the One. Each line names a harsh result: the body worn down, deep suffering, withering in the womb, and even the loss of power and position. The pictures are strong on purpose. They show that ill-will wears a person down from the inside. Bit by bit, it chips away their steadiness and footing.

Think of a phone running a hidden app all day. You never see it, but the battery keeps draining. A grudge drains a person the same way, and it gives nothing back.

A Question to Sit With

What has holding a grudge ever gotten you?
