Verse 4 of 5

A Steady, Unshakable Place

ਸੰਤ ਮੰਡਲ ਕਾ ਨਿਹਚਲ ਆਸਨੁ ॥
sant mandal kaa nihchal aasan.
The Realm of the Saints is the eternal, ever-stable place.
ਸੰਤ ਮੰਡਲ ਮਹਿ ਪਾਪ ਬਿਨਾਸਨੁ ॥
sant mandal meh paap binaasan.
In the Realm of the Saints, sins are destroyed.
ਸੰਤ ਮੰਡਲ ਮਹਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਕਥਾ ॥
sant mandal meh nirmal kathaa.
In the Realm of the Saints, the immaculate sermon is spoken.
ਸੰਤਸੰਗਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੁਖ ਨਸਾ ॥੩॥
satsang ha-umai dukh nasaa. ||3||
In the Society of the Saints, the pain of egotism runs away. ||3||

In plain words

The company of the One's people is a seat that never wobbles.

In the company of the One's people, wrongs are wiped out.

In the company of the One's people, pure words of the One are spoken.

In the Sangat, the pain of ego, the feeling of being a separate self, runs away.

The Sangat is steady ground when life gets rough.
The deeper layer

The company of the One's people is a steady place to stand.

The verse calls it a nihchal aasan, a seat that never wobbles. When life gets rough, it does not tip over. There, wrongdoing is cleared away, and true, clean words are spoken.

It also eases the pain of haumai. Haumai is ego — the feeling of being a separate self, cut off from everyone. Picture sitting alone at lunch, feeling like nobody sees you. Then friends wave you over, and the lonely ache melts. The Sangat does that for the pain of ego.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you feel steady when things around you feel shaky?
