Sikhism·Raag Bhairao·Shabad 73
Verse 3 of 5

Where Fear Loses Its Voice

ਸੰਤ ਮੰਡਲ ਮਹਿ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣੁ ਰਹੈ ॥
sant mandal meh janam maran rahai.
In the Realm of the Saints, birth and death are ended.
ਸੰਤ ਮੰਡਲ ਮਹਿ ਜਮੁ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਕਹੈ ॥
sant mandal meh jam kichhoo na kahai.
In the Realm of the Saints, the Messenger of Death cannot touch the mortal.
ਸੰਤਸੰਗਿ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
satsang ho-ay nirmal banee.
In the Society of the Saints, one's speech becomes immaculate
ਸੰਤ ਮੰਡਲ ਮਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੀ ॥੨॥
sant mandal meh naam vakhaanee. ||2||
In the realm of the saints, the Lord's Name is chanted. ||2||

In plain words

In the company of the One's people, the coming and going of birth and death comes to rest.

In the company of the One's people, death has nothing to say.

In the Sangat, your words become clean.

In the company of the One's people, the Naam is chanted.

Fear grows quiet among the One's people.
The deeper layer

In the company of the One's people, even the fear of death grows quiet.

The verse says that among good people, janam maran rahai — birth and death come to rest. And jam kichhoo na kahai — the messenger of death has nothing to say. The plain meaning for us is this: the fear of endings loses its voice.

Think of a thunderstorm at night. Alone, it feels huge. With your family around you on the couch, it is just noise outside. The company of the One's people does that for the heart. There, words grow true and clean, and the Naam is sung together.

A Question to Sit With

What fear feels smaller when you are with the right people?
