What Makes A Gathering Holy

ਸੰਤ ਮੰਡਲੁ ਤਹਾ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ॥
sant mandal tahaa kaa naa-o.
That alone is called the Realm of the Saints,
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕੇਵਲ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
paarbarahm kayval gun gaa-o. ||1|| rahaa-o.
where only the Glorious Praises of the Supreme Lord God are sung. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

That alone is called the company of the One's people,

where only the praises of the Supreme One are sung.

What makes a place holy is where the hearts are turned.
The deeper layer

A gathering is holy wherever the praises of the One are sung.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line. It is the center of the shabad. Everything else leans on it.

It answers a simple question: what makes a gathering holy? sant mandal tahaa kaa naa-o — that is what we call the company of the good. It is any place where the praises of the One are sung.

It is not about a special building. It is not about a big crowd. Two friends singing together in a car can be a sant mandal. What makes it holy is what the hearts are doing, not the walls around them.

A Question to Sit With

When has being with others made something feel bigger than yourself?
