Verse 1 of 5

Roots Before Branches

ਭੈਰਉ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
bhairo mehlaa 5.
Bhairao, Fifth Mehl:
ਲਾਜ ਮਰੈ ਜੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਲੇਵੈ ॥
laaj marai jo naam na layvai.
One who does not repeat the Naam, the Name of the Lord, shall die of shame.
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਹੂਨ ਸੁਖੀ ਕਿਉ ਸੋਵੈ ॥
naam bihoon sukhee ki-o sovai.
Without the Name, how can he ever sleep in peace?
ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਨੁ ਛਾਡਿ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਚਾਹੈ ॥
har simran chhaad param gat chaahai.
The mortal abandons meditative remembrance of the Lord, and then wishes for the state of supreme salvation;
ਮੂਲ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਾਖਾ ਕਤ ਆਹੈ ॥੧॥
mool binaa saakhaa kat aahai. ||1||
but without roots, how can there be any branches? ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Whoever does not repeat the Naam is crushed with shame.

Without the Naam, how can anyone sleep in peace?

A person leaves off remembering the One, and still wishes for the highest state.

But without roots, how can there be any branches?

You cannot grow branches without first growing roots.
The deeper layer

Remembering the One is the root, and the highest state grows from it like branches from a tree.

Laaj marai: dies of shame, an old way of saying a life feels empty and exposed. Naam bihoon: without the Naam, sleep is restless. Param gat: the highest state. Mool binaa saakhaa kat aahai: without roots, where are the branches? You cannot skip the root and still hope for the fruit.

A Question to Sit With

What is a daily root habit that quietly holds up something bigger in your life?
