Verse 3 of 5

A Stone Stays A Stone

ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਇ ਕਹਾ ਸੁਚਿ ਸੈਲੁ ॥
tirath naa-ay kahaa such sail.
How can a stone be purified by bathing at a sacred shrine of pilgrimage?
ਮਨ ਕਉ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ॥
man ka-o vi-aapai ha-umai mail.
The filth of egotism clings to the mind.
ਕੋਟਿ ਕਰਮ ਬੰਧਨ ਕਾ ਮੂਲੁ ॥
kot karam banDhan kaa mool.
Millions of rituals and actions taken are the root of entanglements.
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਭਜਨ ਬਿਨੁ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਪੂਲੁ ॥੨॥
har kay bhajan bin birthaa pool. ||2||
Without meditating and vibrating on the Lord, the mortal gathers only worthless bundles of straw. ||2||

In plain words

How can a stone be made pure by bathing at a holy place?

The dirt of ego clings to the mind.

Millions of rituals and deeds are the root of more tangles.

Without remembering the One, a person gathers only useless bundles of straw.

Outside actions do not reach what needs to change inside.
The deeper layer

The dirt that needs washing is ego, and it clings to the mind, out of reach of any outer bath.

Tirath naa-ay kahaa such sail: how does a stone become pure by bathing at a pilgrimage place? A stone dipped in holy water comes out a stone. Ha-umai mail: the dirt of ego (haumai — the feeling of being a separate self). Kot karam: millions of rituals, done with the heart left out, only tie more knots. That holds for empty ritual in any place and any practice. Birthaa pool: a useless bundle of straw.

A Question to Sit With

When have you done the outward thing right but known your heart was somewhere else?
