Verse 4 of 5

Only What Is True Fills You

bin khaa-ay boojhai nahee bhookh.
Without eating, hunger is not satisfied.
rog jaa-ay taaN utreh dookh.
When the disease is cured, then the pain goes away.
kaam kroDh lobh mohi bi-aapi-aa.
The mortal is engrossed in sexual desire, anger, greed and attachment.
jin parabh keenaa so parabh nahee jaapi-aa. ||3||
He does not meditate on God, that God who created him. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Without eating, hunger does not go away.

When the sickness is cured, then the pain goes away.

A person is caught up in craving, anger, greed and clinging, and does not remember the One who made them.

Food eaten fills you, and medicine taken heals.
The deeper layer

Hunger needs food and sickness needs a cure, and a mind caught in craving and anger needs the One who made it.

Bin khaa-ay boojhai nahee bhookh: hunger stays until you eat. Rog jaa-ay taan utreh dookh: when the sickness goes, the pain goes. Kaam krodh lobh moh: craving, anger, greed and clinging. Jin prabh keenaa: the One who made you, the One a person forgets while caught in all of these.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you can only understand by doing it, not just reading about it?
