The Inner Storms Settle

ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਸਿਉ ਲਾਗੋ ਹੇਤੁ ॥
charan kamal si-o laago hayt.
I have fallen in love with the Lord's Lotus Feet.
ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਬਿਨਸਿਓ ਮਹਾ ਪਰੇਤੁ ॥

In an instant, the terrible demons are destroyed.
ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੁ ਜਾਪਿ ॥
aath pahar har har jap jaap.
Twenty-four hours a day, I meditate and chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.
ਰਾਖਨਹਾਰ ਗੋਵਿਦ ਗੁਰ ਆਪਿ ॥੨॥
raakhanhaar govid gur aap. ||2||
The Guru is Himself the Savior Lord, the Lord of the Universe. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I have fallen in love with the lotus feet of the One.

In a moment, the great monster that haunted me was gone. All day and all night I repeat the Naam of the One, Har, Har. The Guru, the Lord of the World, is my Protector.

The worries that feel like monsters can vanish in a moment.
The deeper layer

Love for the One chases off the great monster inside, and the Guru keeps you safe.

Charan kamal si-o laago hayt: love for the One's lotus feet, a picture of humble nearness. Khin meh binsi-o mahaa parayt: in an instant, the great demon was destroyed. The demons of these verses are the fears, cravings and angers that haunt a heart. Aath pahar means all eight watches, day and night. Raakhanhaar govid gur aap: the Guru is the Protector, the Lord of the World.

Think of a shadow on the bedroom wall that looks like a monster. When someone you trust turns on the lamp, it is gone in a moment.

A Question to Sit With

What is a worry that once felt like a monster but turned out smaller than you feared?
