Verse 4 of 5

Bonds Loosened, Hope Fulfilled

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
gur parsaad param pad paa-i-aa.
By Guru's Grace, I have obtained the supreme status.
ਗੁਣ ਗੋੁਪਾਲ ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਨਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥
gun gopaal din rain Dhi-aa-i-aa.
Day and night I meditate on the Glories of God.
ਤੂਟੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਪੂਰਨ ਆਸਾ ॥
tootay banDhan pooran aasaa.
My bonds are broken, and my hopes are fulfilled.
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਚਰਣ ਰਿਦ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਿਵਾਸਾ ॥੩॥
har kay charan rid maahi nivaasaa. ||3||
The Feet of the Lord now abide in my heart. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

By the Guru's grace, I have reached the highest place.

Day and night I keep the goodness of the Lord of the World in mind. My ropes are broken, and my hopes have come true. The feet of the One now live in my heart.

Grace is always here, like sunlight waiting at the curtain.
The deeper layer

The Guru's grace lifts you to the highest place, and the ropes that held you fall away.

Gur parsaad means the Guru's grace. Grace is always here. It is like sunlight at a window; you only have to open the curtain. Through it comes param pad, the highest state. Gun gopaal din rain dhi-aa-i-aa: day and night, the goodness of the Lord of the World is kept in mind.

Then tootay banDhan pooran aasaa — the ropes that tied the heart come loose, and its hopes come true. And the feet of the One, meaning the nearness of the One, find a home in the heart.

A Question to Sit With

When did something you hoped for finally arrive after you let go of forcing it?
