Sikhism·Raag Bhairao·Shabad 87
Verse 3 of 5

Wealth, Youth, And Every Good Way

ਧਨੁ ਮਾਲੁ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਗੋਪਾਲ ॥
Dhan maal joban jugat gopaal.
The Lord of the World is my wealth, property, youth and ways and means.
ਜੀਅ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਨਿਤ ਸੁਖ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲ ॥
jee-a paraan nit sukh partipaal.
He continually cherishes and brings peace to my soul and breath of life.
ਅਪਨੇ ਦਾਸ ਕਉ ਦੇ ਰਾਖੈ ਹਾਥ ॥
apnay daas ka-o day raakhai haath.
He reaches out with His Hand and saves His slave.
ਨਿਮਖ ਨ ਛੋਡੈ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਸਾਥ ॥੨॥
nimakh na chhodai sad hee saath. ||2||
He does not abandon us, even for an instant; He is always with us. ||2||

In plain words

The Lord of the World is my money, my belongings, my youth, and my way of doing things.

Day after day the One cares for my soul and my breath, and gives them peace. The One reaches out a hand and keeps the One's servant safe. The One stays with us always, and never leaves, not for a single moment.

The best support is the kind that never lets go, even for a second.
The deeper layer

The One is everything you own and everything you are, and never leaves your side.

Dhan maal joban jugat gopaal: money, belongings, youth and skill are all gopaal, the Lord of the World. Jee-a praan nit sukh partipaal: every day the One cares for soul and breath and brings them peace. Apnay daas ka-o day raakhai haath: the One gives a hand and keeps the servant safe. Nimakh na chhodai sad hee saath: not for the blink of an eye does the One let go.

Think of a parent holding a toddler's hand on a crowded street. The grip never loosens, all the way home.

A Question to Sit With

Who or what has stayed with you through everything?
