Verse 2 of 5

Only the Name Is Real

ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਭ ਝੂਠੁ ॥
har kay naam binaa sabh jhooth.
Without the Name of the Lord, everything is false.
bin gur pooray mukat na paa-ee-ai saachee dargahi saakat mooth. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Without the Perfect Guru, liberation is not obtained. In the Court of the True Lord, the faithless cynic is plundered. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Without the Naam of the One, everything is false.

Without the Perfect Guru, no one finds freedom. In the True Court, the one cut off from the One is robbed and left with empty hands.

What is true holds; what is only for show washes off.
The deeper layer

Without the Naam, everything washes away; the Perfect Guru opens the way to freedom.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad, the line to stop on and think about most.

Har kay naam binaa sabh jhooth — without the Naam of the One, everything is jhooth, false. It is like cheap paint that washes off in the first rain.

Bin gur pooray mukat na paa-ee-ai — without the Perfect Guru, freedom is not found. Mukat means being set free from what traps us.

The last part speaks of the saakat. That is a person who feels cut off from the One. In the True Court, such a person is mooth, robbed. They arrive with empty hands, having lost track of what was true.

A Question to Sit With

How can you tell the difference between something true and something just for show?
