Sikhism·Raag Bhairao·Shabad 89
Verse 3 of 5

Clean Outside Isn't Clean Inside

ਸੋਈ ਕੁਚੀਲੁ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
so-ee kucheel kudrat nahee jaanai.
One who does not know the Lord's Creative Power is polluted.
ਲੀਪਿਐ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਸੁਚਿ ਹਰਿ ਮਾਨੈ ॥
leepi-ai thaa-ay na such har maanai.
Ritualistically plastering one's kitchen square does not make it pure in the Eyes of the Lord.
ਅੰਤਰੁ ਮੈਲਾ ਬਾਹਰੁ ਨਿਤ ਧੋਵੈ ॥
antar mailaa baahar nit Dhovai.
If a person is polluted within, he may wash himself everyday on the outside,
ਸਾਚੀ ਦਰਗਹਿ ਅਪਨੀ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਵੈ ॥੨॥
saachee dargahi apnee pat khovai. ||2||
but in the Court of the True Lord, he forfeits his honor. ||2||

In plain words

The one who does not know the wonder of the One's creation is the one who is unclean.

Plastering the kitchen floor by the rules does not make it pure in the eyes of the One. A person who is dirty inside may wash the outside every day, and still loses their honor in the True Court.

Cleaning the outside doesn't reach an unkindness left inside.
The deeper layer

Being clean inside comes from knowing the One's wonder, and outside washing cannot reach it.

So-ee kucheel kudrat nahee jaanai — the one who never notices the Creator's wonder, the kudrat, stays unclean. In those days, some people plastered their kitchen floor in a special way to make it holy. Leepi-ai thaa-ay na such — that plastering does not make anyone pure.

Antar mailaa baahar nit dhovai — a person may wash the outside every day while the inside stays dirty. Picture washing only the outside of a lunchbox. The old food inside still smells.

The verse is not against washing or cooking with care. It is aimed at any habit that polishes the outside and forgets the heart.

A Question to Sit With

What's a way people look good on the outside without changing on the inside?
