When Kindness Turns You Around

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਕਰਮੁ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥
jis no karam karay kartaar.
That person, unto whom the Creator Lord shows Mercy,
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਹੋਇ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਉਹਾਰੁ ॥
saaDhsang ho-ay tis bi-uhaar.
deals with the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਲਾਗਾ ਰੰਗੁ ॥
har naam bhagat si-o laagaa rang.
One who lovingly worships the Lord's Name,

In plain words

The person the Creator shows kindness to spends their days in the Sangat.

They come to love the Naam of the One and devotion to it. Nanak says: nothing ever blocks that person's way.

One touch of kindness can turn a whole life around.
The deeper layer

When the Creator's kindness reaches you, you find the Sangat, love the Naam, and your way opens clear.

Jis no karam karay kartaar — this is the person the Creator, the Kartaar, shows karam, kindness, to. Saadhsang ho-ay tis bi-uhaar — that person's dealings are with the saadhsang, the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One. It is like joining a team where everyone helps you play better.

Har naam bhagat si-o laagaa rang — they come to love the Naam. Kaho Naanak tis jan nahee bhang — Nanak says no obstacle blocks their way.

The earlier verses showed a life gone hollow. This one shows the way back, through the Creator's kindness.

A Question to Sit With

When has a bit of kindness changed the direction you were heading?
