One Clay, Many Cups

ਮਾਟੀ ਏਕ ਸਗਲ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥
maatee ayk sagal sansaaraa.
The entire universe is made of the same clay.
ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਭਾਂਡੇ ਘੜੈ ਕੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਰਾ ॥੩॥
baho biDh bhaaNday gharhai kumHaaraa. ||3||
The Potter has shaped it into all sorts of vessels. ||3||

In plain words

The whole world is made of the same one clay.

The Potter shapes it into all kinds of pots and cups and bowls.

We're all shaped into different forms from the very same clay.
The deeper layer

The whole world is one clay, shaped into many different forms.

Maatee ayk sagal sansaaraa: one clay, the whole world. Baho bidh bhaanday ghaRai kumhaaraa: the Potter shapes it into many kinds of pots. A mug, a bowl and a vase look different and do different jobs, yet each is the same clay. The differences are lovely, and none of them makes one pot higher than another.

A Question to Sit With

If everyone's the same clay, what makes each cup special without making it better?
