In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

The One is in my soul, and my soul is in the One. I come to see this by thinking on the Guru's teaching.

Through the Word, I come to know the Guru's words, sweet as nectar. My sorrow is cut away, and my ego, the feeling of being a separate self, dies down.

The One is already living inside you.
The deeper layer

The One and your own soul live inside each other.

Aatam meh raam, raam meh aatam — the One, Raam, is in the soul, the aatam. And the soul is in the One. Think of a wave and the ocean. The wave is made of ocean, and the ocean is in every wave. There is no gap to cross. There is only something to notice.

That noticing comes gur beechaaraa, by thinking over the Guru's teaching. Amrit banee is the Guru's word, sweet as nectar. When it sinks in, dukh kaatai ha-o maaraa — sorrow is cut away and ha-o, the proud "me, me, me," fades.

This opening sets up the whole shabad. Ego is the sickness, and the Guru's word is the cure.

A Question to Sit With

When was a moment you felt completely connected to everything around you, with no separation at all?
