Even The Elements Carry The Ache

ਪਉਣੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਬੈਸੰਤਰੁ ਰੋਗੀ ਰੋਗੀ ਧਰਤਿ ਸਭੋਗੀ ॥
pa-un paanee baisantar rogee rogee Dharat sabhogee.
Air, water and fire are diseased; the world with its enjoyments is diseased.
ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇਹ ਸਿ ਰੋਗੀ ਰੋਗੀ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਸੰਜੋਗੀ ॥੩॥
maat pitaa maa-i-aa dayh se rogee rogee kutamb sanjogee. ||3||
Mother, father, Maya and the body are diseased; those united with their relatives are diseased. ||3||

In plain words

Air, water and fire carry the sickness; the world with all its pleasures carries it.

Mother and father, Maya, the pull of passing things, and the body all carry the sickness; so do those wrapped up in their families.

The gray you see in the world often comes from the lonely lens you look through.
The deeper layer

The same ache of feeling separate touches everything we see and love.

The view now grows wider and wider. Pa-un paanee baisantar — air, water, and fire. Maat pitaa maa-i-aa dayh — mother, father, maya, and the body. Maya means the pull of passing things. All of them are called rogee, touched by the one sickness.

This is not blaming family or the world. Air and water are not bad. Parents are not bad. It is like wearing gray sunglasses. Everything looks gray, but the gray is in the glasses. The sickness is the feeling of being separate, laid over everything we see.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever blamed something outside you for a feeling that was coming from inside?
