Verse 14 of 14

The Maker In Every Heart

ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਇਆ ॥
kahai naanak sabh ko karay karaa-i-aa.
Says Nanak, everyone acts as the Lord makes them act.
ਸੇ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
say parvaan jinee har si-o chit laa-i-aa.
They alone are approved and accepted, who focus their consciousness on the Lord.
ਭਗਤਾ ਕਾ ਅੰਗੀਕਾਰੁ ਕਰਦਾ ਆਇਆ ॥
bhagtaa kaa angeekaar kardaa aa-i-aa.
He has made His devotees His Own.
ਕਰਤੈ ਅਪਣਾ ਰੂਪੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥੧੩॥੧॥੨॥
kartai apnaa roop dikhaa-i-aa. ||13||1||2||
The Creator has appeared in His Own Form. ||13||1||2||

In plain words

Nanak says: everyone acts as the One makes them act.

Those who keep their minds on the One are accepted.

The One has always made the devotees the One's own.

The Creator has shown the Creator's own form.

Turn your whole attention toward the One, and you are welcomed home as the One's own.
The deeper layer

Everyone moves as the One moves them, and those who keep their minds on the One are welcomed as the One's own.

Guru Amar Das, writing as Nanak, opens the story to everyone at its close.

kahai naanak sabh ko karay karaa-i-aa — everyone acts as the One moves them. say parvaan jinee har si-o chit laa-i-aa — the ones accepted are those who turn their attention to the One. The One makes such people its own.

And kartai apnaa roop dikhaa-i-aa: the Creator showed its own form. That is what the whole Prahlaad story has shown. The One became visible for the sake of one trusting heart. Think of a parent who steps out of the crowd at a school play, just so their child can see them.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you turn your full attention toward what matters most to you?
