Dear One, my Beloved, please pour Your kindness over me.
Day and night, I, Your humble one, ask to sing of Your goodness. Through the Guru's word, I am lifted to safety.
The simplest prayer is enough: "Dear One, please be kind to me, and let me sing of You."
This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the centre of the shabad, the line the whole song leans on.
Har jee-o kirpaa karahu mayray pi-aaray — dear beloved One, pour Your kirpaa, Your kindness, on me. An-din har gun deen jan maangai — day and night, the deen jan, the humble one, asks for one thing. Not toys or money, but har gun, the chance to sing the One's goodness.
Gur kai sabad udhaaray — through the Guru's word, that person is carried to safety. Grace here is asked for and received, never earned. It is like a child who reaches up and is lifted by a parent. The song keeps coming back to that picture.
If you could ask for one thing that is not a thing, what would it be?
