Too Full Of Wonders To Describe

ਐਸੋ ਧਣੀ ਗੁਵਿੰਦੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ॥

Such is my Lord and Master, the Lord of the Universe.
ਬਰਨਿ ਨ ਸਾਕਉ ਗੁਣ ਬਿਸਥਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
baran na saaka-o gun bisthaaraa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
I cannot even describe His Many Virtues. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Such is my Master, the Lord of the Universe.

I cannot describe how far the One's good qualities spread.

Some things are so full of wonder that no list could ever finish describing them.
The deeper layer

The One is so full of wonders that words run out long before the wonders do.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the centre of the shabad. All the millions in the other verses lean on it.

aiso Dhanee guvind hamaaraa — such is my Master, the One who cares for the whole universe. baran na saaka-o gun bisthaaraa — I cannot describe how far the good qualities spread.

So all that counting turns into a happy confession. The wonders cannot be counted. It is like trying to count the drops in a waterfall. You laugh and give up. The opening shabad of this raag has the same wonder, the kind that leaves you without words.

A Question to Sit With

What is something so amazing that you run out of words trying to describe it?
