A Life With No Inner Turn Is Flavorless

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੫ ॥
salok mehlaa 5.
Shalok, Fifth Mehl:
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਸਿਮਰਹਿ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਤੈ ਤਨਿ ਉਡੈ ਖੇਹ ॥
har naam na simrahi saaDhsang tai tan udai khayh.
That body, which does not remember the Lord's Name in meditation in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, shall be reduced to dust.
ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਤੀ ਤਿਸੈ ਨ ਜਾਣਈ ਨਾਨਕ ਫਿਟੁ ਅਲੂਣੀ ਦੇਹ ॥੧॥
jin keetee tisai na jaan-ee naanak fit aloonee dayh. ||1||
Cursed and insipid is that body, O Nanak, which does not know the One who created it. ||1||

In plain words

A life that never pauses to remember what's good can feel strangely empty and flavorless.

But a heart that knows the One who made it is full and alive.

A life with no inner turn isn't so much punished as flavorless — remembrance gives it its savor.
The deeper layer

A short Shalok of Guru Arjan (Fifth Mehl): a body "which does not remember the Lord's Name in the Company of the Holy shall be reduced to dust... cursed and insipid." The word pheekaa — insipid, flavorless — is the key: a life lived without any inner turn isn't punished so much as tasteless, missing its savor. The qMonk voice keeps the gentle contrast — empty-and-flavorless versus full-and-alive — and drops the harsher "cursed." The remedy is quietly social: remembrance in the Saadh Sangat, good company.

A Question to Sit With

What gives your days their 'flavor' and makes them feel full rather than empty?
