You Don't Travel Far to Find What's Holy

pa-orhee.
Pauree:
aapay athsath tirath kartaa aap karay isnaan.
The Creator Himself is the sixty-eight sacred places of pilgrimage; He Himself takes the cleansing bath in them.
aapay sanjam vartai savaamee aap japaa-ihi naam.
He Himself practices austere self-discipline; the Lord Master Himself causes us to chant His Name.
aap da-i-aal ho-ay bha-o khandan aap karai sabh daan.
He Himself becomes merciful to us; the Destroyer of fear Himself gives in charity to all.
jis no gurmukh aap bujhaa-ay so sad hee dargahi paa-ay maan.
One whom He has enlightened and made Gurmukh, ever obtains honor in His Court.
jis dee paij rakhai har su-aamee so sachaa har jaan. ||14||
One whose honor the Lord Master has preserved, comes to know the True Lord. ||14||

In plain words

The One is all the holy places people travel to — and the one who bathes there too.

Whatever good and holy thing you could go searching for, the One is already that.

The One is kind, and freely gives away fearlessness to everyone.

A heart the One has brightened carries honor wherever it goes.

You don't have to travel far to find what's holy — its source is everywhere, including right where you are.
The deeper layer

This Pauree relocates pilgrimage to the One: "the Creator Himself is the sixty-eight sacred places, and He Himself bathes in them." People traveled great distances to holy rivers and shrines believing the sacred was there; the Vaar says the sacred is the One, who is every holy place and every holy act. This is the Gurus' steady inward turn — you don't have to journey somewhere far to find the holy, because its source is everywhere and within. "The Destroyer of fear gives fearlessness to all" — a free gift, not a prize won by pilgrimage. For a child: you don't have to travel to a special faraway place to find what's holy; it's already everywhere, including right where you are.

A Question to Sit With

Is there somewhere you think of as 'special' — and could that same specialness be found closer to home?
