Verse 44 of 64

Without Wisdom to Steer By, We Stumble

salok mehlaa 3.
Shalok, Third Mehl:
naanak bin satgur bhaytay jag anDh hai anDhay karam kamaa-ay.
O Nanak, without meeting the True Guru, the world is blind, and it does blind deeds.
sabdai si-o chit na laav-ee jit sukh vasai man aa-ay.
It does not focus its consciousness on the Word of the Shabad, which would bring peace to abide in the mind.
taamas lagaa sadaa firai ahinis jalat bihaa-ay.
Always afflicted with the dark passions of low energy, it wanders around, passing its days and nights burning.
jo tis bhaavai so thee-ai kahnaa kichhoo na jaa-ay. ||1||
Whatever pleases Him, comes to pass; no one has any say in this. ||1||

In plain words

Without any wisdom to steer by, a person can stumble around doing things that don't help.

A restless heart that won't settle on anything good keeps churning, day and night.

Whatever pleases the One comes to pass; no one else has a say.

Without wisdom to steer by, we stumble — but a heart can always be turned around.
The deeper layer

This one says that without wisdom to steer by, we stumble.

Without meeting the True Guru, the verse says, the world is blind and does blind things. That describes a condition, not an insult. It means stumbling without a map.

Sabdai si-o chit na laav-ee — the mind does not settle on the Word, the one thing that would bring peace. So it wanders, day and night, burning with restless feelings.

Think of riding a bike in thick fog with no light. You wobble and bump into things. It is not that you are bad. You just cannot see.

The verse ends with trust. Whatever pleases the One comes to pass. Even the stumbling happens inside hukam, the One's will that runs through everything. That same will can turn a heart around. The answer is simply to let a little wisdom in to steer by.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel like you're stumbling around, what helps you find your footing again?
