Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
People who love the One are carried safely across the roughest waters — held up by that love.
Think of the Name as a strong boat, and a wise teacher as the one steering it across.
The One is powerful and endlessly kind, and through good teaching that kindness begins to taste sweet.
"Pour a little of Your kindness on me," the heart prays, "and let me remember You."
This one says the Name is a boat, and the Guru steers it across.
Har har naam pot hai — the Name is the ship. Gur khayvat — the Guru is the one who steers. Through the Word, the Guru carries the soul across the big, stormy sea of life.
Life can feel huge, like an ocean. You do not have to swim it alone. You just get in the boat. Think of a ferry crossing a wide bay. You sit down, the captain steers, and you arrive.
The shabad ends not with winning but with a prayer. Kar kirpaa sun bayntee — be kind, and hear my prayer. Let me remember Your Name. Even the power to remember is asked for as a gift.
The heart of the verse is this. The One is all-powerful and also da-i-aal, very kind. And through the Guru, the One feels meeth, sweet. Power and tenderness live in the same One.
When life feels like rough water, what is your "boat" — the thing that carries you through?
