Verse 1 of 4

No One Is Ever Too Far Gone to Be Welcomed

bihaagarhaa mehlaa 4.
Bihaagraa, Fourth Mehl:
In this world, the best occupation is to sing the Praises of the Naam, O my soul. Singing the Praises of the Lord, the Lord is enshrined in the mind.
har har naam pavit hai mayree jindurhee-ay jap har har naam uDhaaray raam.
The Name of the Lord, Har, Har, is immaculate and pure, O my soul. Chanting the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, one is saved.
sabh kilvikh paap dukh kati-aa mayree jindurhee-ay mal gurmukh naam utaaray raam.
All sins and errors are erased, O my soul; with the Naam, the Gurmukh washes off this filth.
vad punnee har Dhi-aa-i-aa jan naanak ham moorakh mugaDh nistaaray raam. ||1||
By great good fortune, servant Nanak meditates on the Lord; even fools and idiots like me have been saved. ||1||

In plain words

The best thing you can do in this whole life is to sing about what is good and true, until it settles deep inside you.

That beautiful Name is spotless and pure — remembering it, you are kept safe.

Old mistakes get washed away, the way dirt rinses off in clean water.

By great good luck you get to remember — and even those who feel they've messed everything up are welcomed and saved.

The best thing you can do with a life is sing about what's good — and no one is ever too far gone to be welcomed.
The deeper layer

The shabad opens with a ranking: jag mahi uttam kaam — "in this world the best work is to sing the Praises." Of everything a life could be spent on, praise is named the highest. The Name is nirmal (immaculate) and remembering it saves — not as reward for good behavior but as a cleansing that happens through the remembering. The last line is the tender turn Guru Ram Das loves: mai moorakh moogadh bhi tarai — "even fools and idiots like me are saved." The qMonk voice renders this humility as inclusion rather than self-insult: "even those who feel they've messed everything up are welcomed." The point is radical accessibility — no one is too far gone.

A Question to Sit With

If singing about good things is the "best work," what good thing would you most want to sing about?
