You Can't Buy the One's Love; Give Your Whole Heart

Let's join hands, O Saints; let's come together, O my dear beloveds, and worship the imperishable, Almighty Lord.

I sought Him through uncounted forms of adoration, O my dear beloveds; now, I dedicate my entire mind and body to the Lord.

man tan Dhan sabh parabhoo kayraa ki-aa ko pooj charhaava-ay.
The mind, body and all wealth belong to God; so what can anyone offer to Him in worship?

He alone merges in the lap of God, unto whom the Merciful Lord Master becomes compassionate.

One who has such pre-ordained destiny written on his forehead, comes to bear love for the Guru.

Says servant Nanak, joining the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, let's worship the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. ||3||

In plain words

Let's join hands, friends, and turn our hearts together toward the One who never fades.

I tried every fancy way to reach the One — but in the end I simply gave my whole self, heart and hands.

Really, everything I have was already the One's — so what could I possibly 'give'? Only my love.

That love grows when kindness touches us — and it grows best when we sit together with good company.

You can't buy the One's love with fancy offerings — everything's already a gift; the only thing to give is your whole heart.
The deeper layer

A quietly profound verse about what we can offer. Guru Arjan says he sought the One through "uncounted forms of adoration" — every ritual and technique — and arrived at a humbling realization: man tan sabh dhan prabh kaa — mind, body, and all wealth already belong to God, so "what can anyone offer in worship?" The only true offering is ourselves, our love — everything else was already the Giver's. This gently dismantles the idea that we can buy or earn the One's favor with impressive spiritual performances. The merging "in the lap of God" comes jis... kirpaal — to whom the One is merciful; it is received, not purchased. The child-level truth: you don't need fancy things to give the One (or anyone you love) — the real gift is your own whole heart.

A Question to Sit With

If everything you have is already a gift, what does that change about how you say thank you?
