Raag Bilaaval
Commentary

Raag Bilaaval, Du-Pada, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

Fever and sickness clear, mind and body go light, and singing the good turns out to be the one true medicine — so come home, the waiting is over.

The Arc

A Du-Pada folding Rahau and first verse together. The Rahau clears fever, affliction, and disease and invites the joy of good company; the verse names singing praise as the only potent medicine. The close is a homecoming: come dwell where you belong, the separation lifted.

Key Vocabulary

  • taap santaap: fever and affliction, all dispelled
  • sant ras bhog: the joy of good company
  • avkhad: medicine — here, the singing of praise
  • sanjog: a blessed, auspicious meeting
  • biog: separation, now lifted

Themes and Cross-Connections

Kirtan-as-medicine is stated outright: the truest cure is a heart singing the good. The homecoming close pairs healing with belonging — the body well, the soul welcomed back.
