Raag Bilaaval
Commentary

Raag Bilaaval, Dupda, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

Set down every other remedy, take the one medicine, and the fever of worry cools.

The Arc

Guru Arjan opens the Fifth House of Dupde. The first unit carries the Mool Mantar and a verse: every other effort laid aside, the Name taken as medicine, and fevers, faults and ailments cooling into a settled mind. The Rahau — placed in the middle unit, after the first verse, as these short Dupde often do — rests on being kept safe by simple kindness. The close is an arm taken hold of and lifted, remembrance bringing peace to body and heart until fear itself drains away.

Key Vocabulary

  • daaroo naam la-i-aa: the Name taken as the one medicine
  • seetal man bha-i-aa: the mind cooled and soothed
  • raakhanhaarai raakhi-aa: kept safe by the Protector
  • baah pakarh prabh kaadhi-aa: God takes the arm and pulls us free
  • nirbha-i-aa: become fearless

Themes and Cross-Connections

Naam-as-medicine returns as the raag's keynote, and grace arrives as apnee kar ma-i-aa — kindness freely given, not payment earned. The rescuing hand echoes the shelter-shabads that fill this run.

For Raag Bilaaval

Bilaaval opens its Fifth House exactly where it loves to rest: in cooling, in nearness, in the health of a quieted mind.
