Raag Bilaaval
Commentary

Raag Bilaaval, Dupda, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

Awake and clear inside, a heart that gives fear and superstition nothing to hold.

The Arc

The first verse worships with mind and body in good company, until the fear of death itself draws far off. The Rahau describes one who keeps the Name and so stays awake and aware — beyond the reach of spells, superstitions and the evil eye. The close is love doing quietly what force never could: dissolving grasping, anger, pride and attachment, leaving one soaked in joy.

Key Vocabulary

  • an-din sad jaagai: always awake and aware, day and night
  • tant mant nah joh-ee: charms and spells find no hold
  • kaam krodh mad maan moh: grasping, anger, pride's intoxication, attachment
  • aanand magan ras raam rang: absorbed in the joy and color of the One

Themes and Cross-Connections

The five pulls dissolving through love (binsay anraagai) is a signature Guru Arjan move — not repression but a warmth that outshines them. The wakefulness that superstition cannot touch belongs to the same confidence as the raag's healing keynote.

For Raag Bilaaval

Bilaaval keeps this bright rather than fearful: not warding off darkness, but being too full of light for it to matter.
