Verse 2 of 5

Teach Me, and My Life Becomes a Song

ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ਦੇਹਿ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥
tayray gun gaavaa deh bujhaa-ee.
Please bless me with such understanding, that I may sing Your Glorious Praises.
ਜੈਸੇ ਸਚ ਮਹਿ ਰਹਉ ਰਜਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jaisay sach meh raha-o rajaa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
May I dwell in Truth, according to Your Will. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Give me understanding, so that I can sing Your praises.

Let me live in Truth, at home in Your Will.

Ask for understanding, and life itself becomes praise.
The deeper layer

Understanding to sing, and a life lived in Truth: that is the whole ask.

This is the rahaa-o line, the "pause" line, the center the whole shabad circles back to.

Tayray gun gaavaa deh bujhaa-ee means "give me bujhaa-ee, understanding, so I can sing Your goodness." Jaisay sach meh raha-o rajaa-ee means "so I may live in Truth, in step with Your rajaa-ee." Rajaa-ee is the One's will. It is not an order barked from outside. It is the flow of life that a person learns to move with.

The ask is small and huge at once. It is not for gifts. It is for the understanding to praise and the grace to live truthfully. Think of a surfer. A surfer does not fight the wave, but learns to ride it.

A Question to Sit With

What would it feel like if your whole day were quietly a kind of thank-you?
