Verse 4 of 5

Barely a Speck of How Vast You Are

ਕਿਆ ਹਉ ਕਥੀ ਕਥੇ ਕਥਿ ਦੇਖਾ ਮੈ ਅਕਥੁ ਨ ਕਥਨਾ ਜਾਈ ॥
ki-aa ha-o kathee kathay kath daykhaa mai akath na kathnaa jaa-ee.
What should I say? While talking, I talk of seeing, but I cannot describe the indescribable.
ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਆਖਾ ਤਿਲੁ ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੩॥
jo tuDh bhaavai so-ee aakhaa til tayree vadi-aa-ee. ||3||
As it pleases Your Will, I speak; it is just the tiniest bit of Your greatness. ||3||

In plain words

What can I say about You? I can talk and talk, but the truest thing about You cannot be squeezed into words at all.

So I say only what You move me to say, and even then it captures barely a speck of how vast and wonderful You are.

Words can point at something wonderful without ever fully holding it.
The deeper layer

Words can point at the One but never hold the One.

Akath na kathnaa jaa-ee means "the akath, the Unsayable, cannot be said." Til tayree vadi-aa-ee means whatever I say is only a til, a sesame seed, of Your greatness. A sesame seed is one of the tiniest seeds there is.

Guru Nanak keeps coming back to the same honest wall. Words point, but they cannot hold. Think of pointing at the moon. Your finger shows where it is, but your finger is not the moon. Saying this is not giving up. It is being truthful about how big the One really is.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you have felt that you could never quite put into words?
