Sikhism·Raag Bilaaval·Shabad 10
Verse 3 of 6

The One Who Sees Life and Death the Same Way

man kee parteet man tay paa-ee.
From the mind itself, mental faith is obtained.
pooray gur tay sabad bujhaa-ee.
Through the Guru, I have realized the Shabad.
jeevan maran ko samsar vaykhai.
How rare is that person, who looks upon life and death alike.
bahurh na marai naa jam paykhai. ||2||
She shall never die again, and shall not have to see the Messenger of Death. ||2||

In plain words

Real trust does not come from outside — it grows up from within the mind itself.

Through the perfect Guru I understood the Word, and I began to see life and death as two sides of one calm thing. Whoever sees that way stops fearing the end at all — the dread simply lets go of them.

Seeing life and death as one calm thing loosens the fear of the end.
The deeper layer

Man kee parteet man tay paa-ee — trust found within the mind itself — locates confidence inside, not in outer proof. Seeing life and death samsar (alike) dissolves fear; the frightening Messenger-of-Death image is rendered simply as the fear of death releasing its grip.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you feel calm about something you cannot control?
