Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Among the saints, I hear the word of the One.

The story told, the praises sung, the songs of joy and blessing — their sound fills the day and the night.

Joy shared out loud fills a whole day.
The deeper layer

Among holy people, the One's story is heard, and its joy fills every hour.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad.

Santan kai sunee-at prabh kee baat — among the holy, I hear about the One. Kathaa keertan aanand mangal — the kathaa (the story told and explained), the keertan (praises sung to music), and songs of joy.

This is Suniai, deep listening, the kind Japji praises. Think of a house where good music is always playing softly. After a while the whole house feels different. Here that sound fills the day and the night.

A Question to Sit With

What sound makes a place feel full of life to you?
