Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

In the shelter of the Guru, I have been kept safe.

All through the world, people cheer; my Supreme God carries me across.

The Guru's shelter carries you across.
The deeper layer

Staying close to the Guru keeps you safe.

Raakh lee-ay satgur kee saran — I have been saved, in the shelter of the Guru. This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the centre of the shabad. The next line calls the One taaran taran, the boat that carries people across. Life's hard times are pictured as wide, deep water.

Think of a ferry crossing a big river. You don't have to swim the whole way yourself. You step on, and the ferry takes you. Here the One is not only the helper at the river. The One is the crossing itself. And people all around cheer, glad to see someone reach the other side.

A Question to Sit With

Who or what has helped you get through something that felt too big to cross alone?
