Drive out the five thieves, O my Lord and Master, and let my doubts all burn like incense. ||1||

In plain words

Let the Guru's word settle into my heart, and let the Name live in my mind.

Send away the five troublemakers inside me -- wanting too much, anger, greed, clinging, and pride -- and let my worries burn off like sweet incense rising away.

When good words fill you up, there is less room for what pulls you off course.
The deeper layer

The heart and mind can become a home for the Guru's word.

Gur ko sabad: let the Guru's word make its home in my heart. Har naamaa man sang Dharahu: and keep the Name in my mind.

Then taskar panch, the five inner thieves: craving, anger, greed, attachment and ego. They pull us off course, and the prayer asks the One to drive them out. Last comes bharmaa hom jarahu. A hom is an offering burned in a fire, and here the doubts burn off like incense. Think of a stuffy room that fills with a sweet smell and clears. Trouble turns into something fragrant that rises and is gone.

A Question to Sit With

Which of the five -- wanting too much, anger, greed, clinging, pride -- tugs at you most?
