I apply the dust of the feet of His humble servants to my face and forehead; my hopes, and the many waves of desire, are fulfilled. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I help those who serve You, I talk with them, I stand up and sit down among them.

With the dust of their feet on my face and forehead, my hopes come true, and the endless waves of my wanting grow calm.

Being near holy people can quiet a restless mind.
The deeper layer

Simply being around holy people calms the heart.

Jan kee tahal sambhaakhan — I serve the One's humble people and talk with them. Oothan baithan jan kai sangaa — I stand up and sit down with them. These are the plain moments of a shared life.

The next line gives a picture of deep humility: putting the dust of their feet on my face and forehead. Aasaa pooran anant tarangaa — my hopes are met, and the endless waves of wanting are calmed. Tarangaa means waves.

Think of a stormy sea that grows still. Nobody has to argue with the waves. Holy people do the calming, just by being near.

A Question to Sit With

Who do you feel calmer and steadier around?
