The One Who Knows

ਸੋ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥
so gi-aanee jin sabad liv laa-ee.
He alone is a spiritual teacher, who lovingly focuses his consciousness on the Word of the Shabad.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥
manmukh ha-umai pat gavaa-ee.
The self-willed, egotistical manmukh loses his honor.
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਾਈ ॥
aapay kartai bhagat karaa-ee.
The Creator Lord Himself inspires us to His devotional worship.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਪੇ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੫॥
gurmukh aapay day vadi-aa-ee. ||5||
He Himself blesses the Gurmukh with glorious greatness. ||5||

In plain words

The wise one is the one who lovingly keeps their attention resting on the true Word. Someone full of "me, me, me" loses their good name.

And here is the gentle truth: the loving devotion itself is a gift. The One who made you is the same One who awakens the love in you and lifts you up.

Even the love you feel is a gift you are given.
The deeper layer

A wise person is someone whose attention rests on the Word.

So gi-aanee jin sabad liv laa-ee — the wise one is the one who lovingly focuses on the Word. Liv means loving attention.

Manmukh ha-umai pat gavaa-ee — the self-led person, full of ego, loses honor. Ha-umai is ego, the "me first" feeling. It dims our shine, like a cloud over the sun.

Aapay kartai bhagat karaa-ee — the Creator inspires the devotion. The love itself is a gift. We do not build it by ourselves. Gurmukh aapay day vadi-aa-ee — the One gives greatness to those turned toward the Guru.

Think of a plant leaning toward the window. The plant does the turning, but the sun is what calls it. Love for the One works the same way.

A Question to Sit With

Who is someone whose calm attention teaches you more than their words?
