There Is No Other

ਮੰਨੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਚੀ ਪਤਿ ਪੂਜਾ ॥
mannay naam sachee pat poojaa.
Believing in the Naam, one obtains true honor and adoration.
ਕਿਸੁ ਵੇਖਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋ ਦੂਜਾ ॥
kis vaykhaa naahee ko doojaa.
Who should I see? There is none other than the Lord.
ਦੇਖਿ ਕਹਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਮਨਿ ਸੋਇ ॥
daykh kaha-o bhaavai man so-ay.
I see, and I say, that He alone is pleasing to my mind.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥੮॥੧॥
naanak kahai avar nahee ko-ay. ||8||1||
Says Nanak, there is no other at all. ||8||1||

In plain words

When the One lives in your heart, you carry a quiet dignity nobody can take away -- a worth that does not depend on winning or comparing.

And when I look -- at people, at the sky, at everything -- I keep seeing the same One shining through it all.

Nanak says: there is no other, only this One, everywhere.

Look closely enough and you find the same One shining through everything.
The deeper layer

There is only the One, everywhere.

Mannay naam sachee pat poojaa — trusting the Name brings true honor. Mannai means taking it to heart, as in Japji Sahib. Pat means honor.

Kis vaykhaa naahee ko doojaa — who else could I look at? There is no second one. This is the heart of Ik Onkar, "One Creator," the first words of the Guru Granth Sahib.

Naanak kahai avar nahee ko-ay — Nanak says, there is no other at all.

Think of sunlight coming through many windows. Each window shows a different shape, but it is all the same sun. Everywhere Nanak looks, he sees the same One shining through.

A Question to Sit With

Where have you noticed the same something showing up in very different places?
