ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
bilaaval mehlaa 1.
Bilaaval, First Mehl:
ਮਨ ਕਾ ਕਹਿਆ ਮਨਸਾ ਕਰੈ ॥
man kaa kahi-aa mansaa karai.
The human acts according to the wishes of the mind.
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਪਾਪੁ ਉਚਰੈ ॥
ih man punn paap uchrai.
This mind feeds on virtue and vice.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਦਿ ਮਾਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
maa-i-aa mad maatay taripat na aavai.
Intoxicated with the wine of Maya, satisfaction never comes.
ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਮਨਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਭਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
taripat mukat man saachaa bhaavai. ||1||
Satisfaction and liberation come, only to one whose mind is pleasing to the True Lord. ||1||

In plain words

The mind is a bit like a puppy that runs after whatever it wants next -- sometimes toward kind things, sometimes toward not-so-kind things.

Chasing want after want never quite fills you up; it is like drinking salty water. Satisfaction and freedom come when your heart loves what is true, and rests there.

Chasing want after want is like drinking salt water; loving what is true fills you up.
The deeper layer

Only the True One can fill us up.

Man kaa kahi-aa mansaa karai — a person does what the mind says. Mansaa means desire. The mind reaches toward both punn and paap, good deeds and wrong ones.

Maa-i-aa mad maatay taripat na aavai — drunk on maya, the pull of things, a person is never satisfied. Taripat means feeling full and content. Chasing want after want is like drinking salty water. The more you drink, the thirstier you get.

Taripat mukat man saachaa bhaavai — contentment and freedom come when the mind loves the True One.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that felt exciting to get but did not stay satisfying for long?
