What Goes With You

ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਕਲਤੁ ਸਭੁ ਦੇਖੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨਾ ॥
tan Dhan kalat sabh daykh abhimaanaa.
Gazing upon his body, wealth, wife and all his possessions, he is proud.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਜਾਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bin naavai kichh sang na jaanaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
But without the Name of the Lord, nothing shall go along with him. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You look at your body, your wealth, your family and everything you have, and you feel proud.

Without the Naam, none of it goes along with you.

The one thing that goes everywhere with you is what you carry in your heart.
The deeper layer

The Naam is the one treasure that goes along with you.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Tan dhan kalat sabh daykh abhimaanaa — looking at body, wealth, family and all one has, a person feels proud. Abhimaan means pride.

Bin naavai kichh sang na jaanaa — without the Name, nothing goes along. Sang means along with. Everything we gather stays behind one day. The Name is the treasure that travels with you. Think of a school trip. The souvenirs get lost, but the friendships come home with you.

A Question to Sit With

What is something valuable that is not a thing you could hold in your hands?
