The Only Thing That Lasts

ਕੀਚਹਿ ਰਸ ਭੋਗ ਖੁਸੀਆ ਮਨ ਕੇਰੀ ॥
keecheh ras bhog khusee-aa man kayree.
He enjoys tastes, pleasures and joys in his mind.
ਧਨੁ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਤਨੁ ਭਸਮੈ ਢੇਰੀ ॥
Dhan lokaaN tan bhasmai dhayree.
But his wealth will pass on to other people, and his body will be reduced to ashes.
ਖਾਕੂ ਖਾਕੁ ਰਲੈ ਸਭੁ ਫੈਲੁ ॥
khaakoo khaak ralai sabh fail.
The entire expanse, like dust, shall mix with dust.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਨਹੀ ਉਤਰੈ ਮੈਲੁ ॥੨॥
bin sabdai nahee utrai mail. ||2||
Without the Word of the Shabad, his filth is not removed. ||2||

In plain words

We can spend our days enjoying treats and fun. There is nothing wrong with enjoying. But treats end, and the things we pile up pass on to other hands one day.

What stays clean and bright inside us is what the true Word polishes.

Enjoy the good things lightly, and keep the lasting thing close.
The deeper layer

Only the Word can make the inside clean.

Keecheh ras bhog khusee-aa man kayree — people enjoy tastes, pleasures and fun. Enjoying is not wrong. But wealth passes on to other people, and the body goes back to the earth one day. Khaakoo khaak ralai sabh fail — all that spread-out show mixes back into dust. Things end, so hold them lightly.

Bin sabdai nahee utrai mail — without the Shabad, the Guru's Word, the film on the heart does not come off. Mail means dirt, or film. Think of a smudged pair of glasses. Only a clean cloth makes them clear again.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that lasts inside you even after the fun of a day is over?
