Sikhism·Raag Bilaaval·Shabad 151
Verse 4 of 9

The Song That Heals

ਗੀਤ ਰਾਗ ਘਨ ਤਾਲ ਸਿ ਕੂਰੇ ॥
geet raag ghan taal se kooray.
The various songs, tunes and rhythms are false.
ਤ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਉਪਜੈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਦੂਰੇ ॥
tarihu gun upjai binsai dooray.
Trapped by the three qualities, people come and go, far from the Lord.
ਦੂਜੀ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਦਰਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
doojee durmat darad na jaa-ay.
In duality, the pain of their evil-mindedness does not leave them.
ਛੂਟੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦਾਰੂ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥੩॥
chhootai gurmukh daaroo gun gaa-ay. ||3||
But the Gurmukh is emancipated by taking the medicine, and singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||3||

In plain words

There are all kinds of songs and shows that sparkle for a moment and then fade, leaving you right where you started.

One song heals: the song of the One, sung from love. It is like good medicine: sing it, and the ache of feeling separate begins to melt away.

The song that heals is the one sung from love.
The deeper layer

One song heals: the praise of the One.

Geet raag ghan taal se kooray — songs, tunes and rhythms are false. Kooray means false. This is not against music, since the shabad itself prizes singing the One's praises. It means songs and shows that sparkle for a moment and then fade.

Tarihu gun are the three moods of the world that keep people coming and going, far from the One. Doojee durmat darad na jaa-ay — in doojee, feeling split off from the One, the pain of a twisted mind does not leave.

Chhootai gurmukh daaroo gun gaa-ay — the one who turns to the Guru is set free by taking the medicine: singing the One's praises. Daaroo means medicine. Like good medicine, the song works from the inside.

A Question to Sit With

Is there a song or activity that makes you feel more whole, not just entertained?
